The Vodafone Foundation has deployed two instant networks in the Philippines to help humanitarian work in the country following Typhoon Haiyan.
The portable mobile phone networks, which each fit into four suitcases and are light enough to be transported on a commercial flight, were deployed in Palo, a region south of Tacloban, one of the worst-affected areas.
“This is the second time in 12 months we have deployed the network to the Philippines,” said Andrew Dunnett, director of sustainability & Vodafone Foundation. “We hope it will not only provide much-needed network support for aid agencies, but will enable those people caught in the most devastated areas with no means of communication to connect with their loved ones outside of those areas.”
The last time Vodafone deployed these networks in the country was last December during Typhoon Bopha, when almost 300,000 calls were made in 17 days.
