Morrisons has started a nationwide rollout of Fujitsu tablets to replace stock management processes that still use pen and paper.

Until now, much of the stocktake and re-ordering of food was done on paper and then inputted into a computer, which head of communications at Morrisons, Julian Bailey, said is ‘time consuming, expensive and slow’.

The devices will enable staff to input orders on the shop floor directly into the supply chain. “This will mean less time is consumed in store and we have more information about orders coming online more quickly,” he said. “We’ll be able to see exactly what the demand is and increase availability to make sure we don’t run out of food on particular lines.”

Bailey said all of the tablets are likely to be in place by the end of the year. He explained that this would represent a chunk of the £100m saving target which Morrisons has in place this year, which they are on course to hit, he said.
