EE has revealed that its customers will be able to travel on London’s Underground, DLR and Overground networks using their mobile phone when TfL’s contactless program launches on 16 September.
EE will be the only UK network provider to offer the contactless payment service, with the extension of EE’s Cash on Tap app to TfL’s transport network eliminating the need for customers to queue to top-up Oyster cards, or struggle to find their cards during the morning commute.
The Cash on Tap app, which was developed in partnership with MasterCard, will also help avoid the issue of ‘card clash’, where gates don’t open if customers have more than one contactless card in their purse or wallet.
“As more and more people benefit from the simplicity, convenience and security that mobile contactless payments offer, it’s rapidly becoming clear that the days of the physical wallet are fast becoming numbered,” said Gerry McQuade, chief marketing officer for EE.
EE’s Cash on Tap mobile contactless payment app is due to be compatible with over 500,000 customers’ handsets this year, and can be used in more than 300,000 across the country, including Marks & Spencer, McDonald’s, Pret A Manger and Greggs.
