The Mail Online had the biggest proportion of mobile users, accounting for 63.4 per cent of visitors in September, despite lacking a mobile-optimised site. That's 10.7m unique users, 5.6m of whom exclusively accessed the Mail on mobile devices.

The Mirror Online had the biggest proportion of mobile-only users, however, at 3.3m – 41 per cent of its total uniques for the month. This helped push it into fourth place overall, despite weaker performance on desktop.

Metro saw the biggest growth in mobile users month-on-month, up 25.4 per cent to a total 1.3m in September, while The Sun Online saw the biggest drop. After erecting a paywall in August, its mobile users dropped off by 60.3 per cent the following month. By comparison, the drop on desktop was just 18.6 per cent, suggesting users are less willing to put up with paying to read content on mobile.
